Meet Owner/Operator - Joe Ward:

I’ve always been someone who learns by doing.

Even as a kid, I was happiest taking things apart,

repurposing materials, and building whatever I

needed with my hands. That curiosity led me into

the skilled trades, where I’ve spent more than

thirty years developing experience in carpentry,

fabrication, maintenance, and repair.
 

I enjoyed the work, but I knew I wanted something

more creative and meaningful. As I got more involved in my community through coaching, volunteering, and helping out wherever I could, people started asking for custom projects. What began as small favors for friends and neighbors grew into steady requests for shelving, cabinetry, repairs, and unique, handcrafted builds that reflected their homes and personalities.
 

Then the pandemic hit, and everything shifted. Families suddenly needed workspaces at home, so I started building custom desks designed to fit tight corners, shared spaces, and entire rooms. The response was overwhelming. Those projects reminded me how much I loved designing pieces that make everyday life easier, more comfortable, and more beautiful.

That experience pushed me to take the leap and create Joe’s Custom and Rustic Woodworks. What started in a small shop has grown into a business dedicated to thoughtful craftsmanship and truly personalized design. Today, I work with clients across Michigan to transform their ideas into one of a kind pieces built with care, intention, and lasting quality.
